Being an empath was never meant to make you powerless—it’s a soul superpower to master.
When we spiritually awaken, we begin to realise that everything is energy—and that realisation fundamentally changes how we perceive reality.
For many of us, it is also when we begin to recognise ourselves as empaths.
Empathy is the ability to understand and relate to what another person is feeling, even when we aren’t experiencing the same thing ourselves. If a friend loses someone they love, we can recognise their grief, imagine something of what they are going through and respond with compassion.
But being an empath can feel different. We don’t just understand another person’s emotional state—we can feel it registering within us. Their sadness may arrive as heaviness in our chest, their anxiety as tension in our body or their excitement as a sudden lift in our own energy. We don’t just intellectually recognise another person’s emotional state; we can experience it viscerally within our own body and energetic field.
It’s the difference between hearing a piece of music and standing close enough to the speakers to feel the bass vibrating through your body. Empathy understands the emotion; the empath can experience its resonance.
An empath is highly sensitive to the emotions, energy, and physical states of the people around them. We can walk into a room and immediately feel its atmosphere, sense tension that hasn’t been expressed, pick up on another person’s anxiety or sadness behind their smile, or know that something feels off despite everything appearing fine.
For many awakening souls, I believe this sensitivity is part of our natural energetic perception as souls. We are constantly reading energy. Awakening doesn’t make us empathic; it makes us conscious of a capacity we have been unconsciously using our entire lives.
But before we understand ourselves as empaths, that sensitivity can be overwhelming.
If we are constantly absorbing the emotions, moods and energies around us like a sponge, without recognising where they are coming from, we can easily mistake what we are sensing for our own.
We absorb another person’s anxiety and assume we are anxious. We walk into a heavy environment and wonder why our mood suddenly changes. We become drained around certain people without understanding why. Other people’s emotional states can move through us so seamlessly that we experience them as our own.
Instead of consciously perceiving energy, we unconsciously absorb and internalise it.
The New Age Victimisation of the Empath
One of my issues with the way empaths are portrayed within New Age communities is that this superpower can be turned into powerlessness—almost an energetic disability.
We’re told: Empaths absorb everyone’s energy. Empaths are burnt out with compassion fatigue. Empaths attract narcissists. Empaths can’t cope with crowds.
The empath becomes the helpless energetic sponge, perpetually overwhelmed by the world and dependent upon avoiding the people, places and energies that might affect them.
But the problem isn’t that we feel too much. It’s that nobody taught us how to feel consciously.
The answer isn’t to become less sensitive; it’s to become less absorbent—to keep the perception while losing the enmeshment. The sensitivity hasn’t changed. Our relationship to it has.
Sensitivity without consciousness can feel like vulnerability; sensitivity with mastery becomes intelligence.
The shift is from being an unconscious empath at the mercy of everything we feel to becoming a conscious empath who knows how to work with that sensitivity. And that is when we begin to recognise it for what it can be: a spiritual superpower.
Discernment
One of the greatest gifts of the conscious empath is discernment.
We aren’t reliant solely on appearances, words or what we’re being told. We can sense when someone’s energy contradicts what they are saying, when an intention doesn’t match the presentation or when something that looks right feels wrong.
A smile can be convincing. A story can make perfect sense intellectually. A spiritual teaching can sound profound. But the energy may tell us something else.
That gives us another layer of information against which to test what we see and hear—making us far harder to deceive, manipulate or mislead.
Reading People and Environments
Empaths can be exceptionally perceptive readers of people and environments. We register the emotional temperature of a room, notice somebody’s mood has shifted before they say anything and sense dynamics between people that aren’t being openly expressed.
We pick up the subtext beneath the surface.
Pattern Recognition
We can also have powerful pattern recognition. We notice small inconsistencies, subtle changes and recurring signals that others may overlook. Seemingly unrelated pieces of information begin to connect.
What initially registers as “something feels off” can become the first clue that something warrants closer scrutiny.
Emotional Intelligence and Connection
Our sensitivity can also create a deep capacity for connection. We can understand what somebody is feeling even when they struggle to articulate it themselves.
People can feel deeply seen by an empath because we aren’t only listening to their words; we’re registering everything being communicated alongside them.
Creativity
Sensitivity is also a powerful creative resource.
A rich emotional and sensory inner world allows us to feel ourselves into another person’s experience, recognise emotional complexity and translate what is difficult to articulate into writing, art, music, performance and storytelling.
What once seemed like feeling too much can become precisely what allows us to create with depth, nuance and pathos.
Intuition and Psychic Ability
Being an empath can provide a natural foundation for developing intuition and psychic abilities because we are already accustomed to receiving information through feeling rather than through the rational mind alone.
For many empaths, clairempathy and clairsentience may be the most natural intuitive abilities.
Clairempathy—clear emotional feeling—is the ability to tune into another person’s emotional state and feel it within our own body or energetic field. We may pick up their sadness, anger or excitement without anything being said or outwardly expressed.
Clairsentience—clear feeling—is the ability to receive information through energetic or physical sensation. Rather than seeing, hearing or knowing something intuitively, we feel it. The energy of a person, place or situation can register as heaviness or lightness, warmth or cold, tingling, pressure, expansion or contraction, or an immediate visceral attraction or repulsion.
Through clairsentience, we can also perceive our energetic body and field, as well as the presence and energy of interdimensional beings. The body becomes an instrument of energetic perception.
The two can work together: clairempathy tells us what someone is feeling emotionally, while clairsentience gives us a felt sense of the energy we are encountering.
As we become more conscious of these impressions, other intuitive abilities may develop too, such as claircognizance—clear knowing: information that arrives as an immediate knowing without any obvious process of reasoning.
Energetic Transmutation
Empaths can also be powerful energetic transmuters.
We don’t only perceive denser emotional energy; we can process it and transform it into a lighter energetic state. When this happens unconsciously, we can become overwhelmed by what we carry. But consciously, we can learn to hold our own frequency rather than automatically taking on the frequency around us.
We can bring calm into chaos, compassion into pain and clarity into confusion. Instead of an environment continually changing us, our presence can begin to change the environment.
And that has implications far beyond ourselves. Every time we transform fear rather than amplify it, bring coherence into conflict or refuse to pass emotional pain onwards, we change what we contribute to the collective energetic field.
That influence ripples through relationships, families, communities and ultimately the wider world.
The unconscious empath absorbs the energy of the world. The conscious empath can help transmute it.
So how do you become a conscious empath—and ultimately develop mastery of your sensitivity?
Beyond understanding what you are as an empath and developing the habit of self-inquiry around your emotional state—what am I feeling, where did it come from, and is it actually mine?—there are practical ways to become less absorbent, more discerning and more intentional in how you interact with the emotions and energy around you.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach, but here are some of the practices that have helped me move from being unconsciously affected by my sensitivity towards consciously working with it and developing greater mastery of it:
The Shadow of the Unconscious Empath
Hypervigilance is a common survival strategy for empaths. If you grew up needing to monitor other people’s moods to remain safe, your nervous system learns to constantly scan the environment:
Is Mum upset? Is Dad angry? Has their energy changed? Am I safe?
This keeps the nervous system stuck on high alert, continually anticipating danger even when none is present. Over time, that chronic state of activation can leave you anxious, exhausted, easily overwhelmed and unable to fully relax or feel safe.
Empaths can also become so accustomed to feeling other people that they lose contact with themselves.
We can become rescuers, fixers and emotional caretakers, mistaking compassion for responsibility and over-functioning or taking on too much responsibility in relationships.
We sense everybody else’s needs while abandoning our own, and the survival strategy of the fawn response can become deeply embedded: keeping others happy, avoiding conflict, suppressing our own needs and adapting ourselves to maintain connection and emotional safety.
Empaths can struggle to set boundaries because understanding why somebody behaves as they do can make us more likely to tolerate it. We see the wound behind the behaviour and mistake compassion for permission.
But understanding somebody’s wound does not mean accepting whatever comes from it. The conscious empath can have compassion for someone without allowing their pain to cross their boundaries.
If you have weak boundaries in your physical experience, this can also cause leaky energetic boundaries. Explore what prevents you from upholding them.
Where are you saying yes when you mean no? Where are you people pleasing? Where are you overriding your own needs to accommodate somebody else’s? Where are you continuing to give access to people who drain you?
Energetic sovereignty begins with recognising that you are allowed to decide who and what has access to you.
Dissociation can sit at the other extreme. If we were overwhelmed as children by feeling our own and everybody else’s emotions so intensely, we may learn to disconnect from feeling altogether. Food, drugs, alcohol, sex or other compulsive behaviours can become ways of numbing sensation. Some unconscious empaths emotionally armour themselves instead, becoming hardened precisely because underneath they feel so much.
This is where shadow work becomes particularly important: recognising where empathy ends and hypervigilance, rescuing, fawning, self-abandonment, dissociation or emotional armouring begins.

Energetic Sovereignty
Empaths are finely tuned instruments, highly receptive to the energy around them. That sensitivity makes energetic sovereignty crucial: the more receptive you are, the more discerning you need to be about what you allow into your field.
Your energetic field acts as the interface through which you sense, receive and interact with energetic information, making its integrity fundamental to clear perception and discernment.
Treat your energetic field with the same boundaries, discernment and hygiene you would your physical body and home. The clearer and more sovereign your field, the easier it becomes to distinguish what is yours from what is not. Sensitivity does not mean everything gets access to you. You decide what enters your field, what remains there and what leaves.
Spiritual Hygiene
I approach spiritual hygiene in the same way I approach physical hygiene: regular maintenance rather than something we think about only once we feel overwhelmed.
If you didn’t regularly wash your physical body or clean your home, the accumulation would affect you. The same principle applies to our energetic bodies and field. You don’t want to be holding onto everybody else’s energies, emotions, projections and problems until you no longer know what is yours. This is especially important for empaths.
Maintain your energetic hygiene as routinely as you shower, brush your teeth or clean your home.
I strongly advise against outsourcing this cleansing to violet flames, any so-called divine rays, Reiki, sound cleansings or other New Age energetic systems because we cannot assume we know what energies we are connecting with. From my experience and perspective, what is presented as benevolent within the New Age can often conceal something malevolent.
The most effective cleansing I recommend is working with the power and purity of your own energy as a soul. The more of your energy you reclaim from fragmentation and Matrix siphoning, the more you have available to yourself.
Remember how powerful and intelligent your energy is—it powers the Matrix. When you work with your own energy, you know exactly what you are working with: there is no external intermediary and no hidden agenda. Use it to cleanse both your energetic field and your home, returning yourself and your space to the clarity, coherence and sovereignty of your own energetic signature.
Here are some basic techniques –
Energetic Field
Every day, you can set the intention to shower your energetic field and bodies in your own energy e.g. I set my intention to wash away all the energies, emotions, projections and problems of others that are not mine to carry, I wash away all stuck and stagnant energies, all thought forms and all energies that do not serve or are not aligned with my highest good or highest expression in accordance and alignment with my purest, truest most authentic essence.
Visualise this in whatever way feels natural to you. I imagine unwanted energy washing away like black sludge, while setting the intention that everything released is either cleansed, purified and transmuted into its highest expression, recycled in service of my highest good and the highest expression of all souls, or it is fully destroyed and disposed of for my highest good and the highest expression of all souls in accordance with my purest, truest most authentic essence. Then I set the intention that my energetic field is fully replenished and restored to full alignment with my purest, truest most authentic essence.
Apply the cleansing across the entirety of your being, all minds, bodies, energetic fields across all timelines, time zones, realms, dimensions, universes.
Energetic Cords and Hooks
Energetic cording can form through our interactions with other people, and the more intimate, prolonged or emotionally intense the relationship, the more substantial that cording can become. It can leave us feeling energetically tethered—continuing to think about, feel or remain affected by another person long after the interaction has ended.
Every day, imagine yourself inside a bubble of your own energy and set the intention to cut and dissolve any energetic cording to anyone or anything that is consciously or unconsciously draining you and is not in alignment with your purest, truest, most authentic essence.
Apply the intention across the entirety of your being, all minds, bodies, energetic fields across all timelines, time zones, realms, dimensions, universes.
Energetic hooks are points of attachment that can form between your energetic field and another person, relationship, experience or environment, keeping an energetic connection active even after the interaction has ended.
For empaths, routinely clearing these hooks can be a useful practice. Apply the intention across the entirety of your being, all minds, bodies, energetic fields across all timelines, time zones, realms, dimensions, universes.
Maintenance of Energetic Field and Bodies
I also advise routinely setting the intention to close and seal any energetic portals that are not in alignment with your purest, truest and most authentic essence, withdrawing any conscious or unconscious permission for them to remain open.
You can also intend to seal and restore any holes, rips, tears or abrasions in your energetic field and energetic bodies, returning them to wholeness, integrity and coherence with your own energy. I visualise waves of light of my own energy doing this and again I would apply it across the entirety of your being.
For empaths accustomed to constantly scanning their environment, the energetic field can feel overstretched—continually reaching outwards and picking up far more information than necessary.
Practise consciously drawing your field back to around three feet from your body, visualising it returning to a contained, comfortable radius around you. Keep bringing it back whenever you notice yourself reaching out energetically until that closer, more contained field becomes its natural resting position.
Cleansing Your Space
I don’t limit energetic hygiene to my body.
Every day, you can set the intention to use your own energy to cleanse and purify your home, car, garden and everything within them.
Set the intention to use your own energy to remove all the energies, emotions, projections, problems of others that are not yours to carry, all stuck and stagnant energies, all thought forms and energies that do not serve your highest good or highest expression in accordance and alignment with your purest, truest, most authentic essence.
Imagine your energy flooding or misting through the environment. Energy can feel particularly stagnant in corners, cupboards, doorways, behind furniture and other rarely disturbed spaces, so include these areas when energetically cleansing your home rather than focusing only on the centre of a room.
As you clear, set the intention that everything removed is cleansed, purified and transmuted into its highest expression; recycled in service of your highest good and the highest expression of all souls; or destroyed and disposed of where appropriate—in accordance with your purest, truest and most authentic essence. Apply it across all your timelines, time zones, realms, dimensions, universes.
Water Supply and all we Consume
On a daily basis, I use my own energy and intention to cleanse, purify and transmute my water supply, food, beverages and anything else I consume into its highest expression, in alignment with my purest, truest and most authentic essence.
Water is considered highly programmable in many energetic practices, meaning its receptivity may also allow it to carry energetic imprints you don’t want to take into your body. I set the intention for this clearing to apply across all timelines, time zones, realms, dimensions and realities.
Morning Clearing
Every morning, whip up your own energy from your ankles upwards, visualising it gathering strength as it rises through your body and begins swirling powerfully around and through you.
Set the intention that your own energy clears and releases any energies and energetic interference that aren’t in full alignment with your purest, truest most authentic essence, restoring you to your natural energetic baseline.
Intend that all that is released is either recycled in service of your highest good and the highest expression of all souls; or destroyed and disposed of where appropriate—in accordance with your purest, truest and most authentic essence. Apply it across all your timelines, timezones, realms, dimensions, universes.
Crowds or Draining Situations
Whenever you have been somewhere crowded like a concert or supermarket or with people or in environments that you experience as emotionally intense. When you leave, set the intention to release the energies, emotions, projections and problems of others that aren’t yours to carry, along with anything else that doesn’t serve your highest good. Intend that all that is released is either recycled in service of your highest good and the highest expression of all souls; or destroyed and disposed of where appropriate—in accordance with your purest, truest and most authentic essence and that your own energy replenishes your field.
Spiritual Protection
We share interdimensional space with beings and intelligences that do not necessarily have our best interests at heart, making spiritual protection as essential as home security. You wouldn’t leave your front door unlocked just because you couldn’t see who might enter.
This is particularly important for empaths because heightened energetic sensitivity means heightened receptivity. Your energetic field is the interface through which you, as a soul, perceive, receive and interact with the energetic environment around you. Maintaining its integrity is therefore fundamental to the clarity of what you perceive.
Protecting your energetic field is as important as locking your front door: you decide what gets access to you.
Ask yourself: How secure is my energetic field—and who or what have I given access to it?
Think carefully before granting that access. Within my spiritual framework, practices such as psychic, mediumship, intuitive, tarot, oracle and Akashic readings; guided meditations involving discarnate beings; group energetic healings and activations; light language; spiritual circles; sound healing; divination; Reiki and other energetic practices can open the energetic field to interference and infiltration.
Likewise, I regard asking discarnate beings for help or protection as an invitation—and I don’t assume that something presenting itself under a particular identity necessarily is what it claims to be. What do you actually know about what you are inviting in and what strings may be attached?
If you have previously granted energetic access, consent or permission that you no longer wish to give, consciously revoke it. Withdraw those permissions and reaffirm that you alone determine what has access to your energetic field.
For this reason, I don’t call upon archangels, angels, deities, guides or ascended masters for protection. I use my own energy. As a soul, you came here with everything you need to protect yourself—and your own energy is ultimately the energy you can trust most to guard your energetic field and keep you safe.
Shield Your Field
For me, shielding is not about fearfully barricading myself from the world. It is about sovereignty and keeping myself clear from energetic interference and distortions.
This is a starting point for energetic shielding, visualise a bubble, egg or cocoon of your own energy around your energetic field, then create separate protective layers around your home and garden, and your car if you have them. Set the intention that each remains permanently in place, protecting you, these spaces and their contents from anything not in full alignment with your purest, truest and most authentic essence, across all timelines, time zones, realms, dimensions and realities.
When you first begin consciously establishing your shielding, you may want to reinforce the intention several times throughout the day. Once the practice feels established, once or twice daily may feel sufficient.
Nervous System & Emotional Regulation
Empathic ability becomes much easier to navigate when the nervous system is regulated.
When we are already dysregulated, another person’s emotional intensity can push us into overwhelm very quickly. This is why nervous-system and emotional regulation are fundamental practices for an empath.
We need to learn how to remain centred while experiencing intensity. Notice an emotion without immediately becoming it. Breathe before reacting. Allow sensations to move through the body rather than suppressing them. Recognise when you have entered fight, flight, freeze or fawn and consciously return yourself towards regulation. Check out Straitjacket On The Soul for more information
The stronger our internal anchor becomes, the less easily we are swept into somebody else’s emotional current.
Many empaths were never taught emotional regulation because we were too busy regulating everybody else.
Learning to sit with our own emotions changes our relationship with sensitivity. Instead of fearing anger, grief, anxiety or discomfort, we become capable of observing them.
Ask yourself: What am I feeling? Where do I feel it in my body? Was I feeling this five minutes ago? Did something trigger me? Does this actually feel like mine?
That space between feeling an emotion and identifying with it is where you stop being a sponge and become an observer.
And then let the emotion move. Emotion is energy in motion; rather than suppressing, analysing or holding onto it, allow it to be felt and released through the body. Humming, singing, somatic shaking, dancing and walking in nature can all support that release.
For a deeper-dive on emotional regulation check out You Can’t Heal What You Won’t Feel .
Things to Cut Out—or Cut Back On
Empaths are finely tuned and highly sensitive, which means overstimulation can quickly become overwhelming. When we already experience emotions, sensations and our environment intensely, adding further stimulation can amplify how much we are feeling and make it harder to remain grounded and regulated.
Caffeine can increase physical arousal, restlessness and anxiety; alcohol can alter mood and emotional regulation; and excessive added sugar can contribute to fluctuations in energy and mood.
Experiment with cutting these out or reducing them and notice how your body responds. For a finely tuned empath, reducing unnecessary stimulation can create more internal calm, stability and space for everything we naturally feel.
Getting to know yourself
Lastly, spend enough time alone that you know what your own energy feels like. Because the more deeply you know yourself, the easier it becomes to recognise what isn’t you.
And turn some of that extraordinary sensitivity inward.
Notice what expands and contracts you. Who energises and depletes you. Which opportunities excite you. Which environments allow you to breathe more deeply. Which relationships require you to shrink or abandon yourself.
The sensitivity was never only meant to tell you about everybody else. It can teach you how to hear yourself.
I hope these practices help you become clearer, stronger and more confident in working with your sensitivity and becoming a conscious empath. Take what resonates, experiment, and discover what works for you.
And above all, see your sensitivity for what it is: an expression of your soul consciousness operating through the human embodiment. It is not something to endure, suppress or apologise for, but something to understand, refine and master. Own it. Trust it. And recognise it for the soul superpower it is.
